Thanks for posting, Thom! I'm awaiting my copy in the mail and was really hoping we might get a Johnny-sanctioned breakdown of these riffs... but alas! As you pointed out, that breakdown of TCM isn't even right. So much for a great revelation. :P
I heard Johnny say not long ago that he was hoping to eventually revamp his website and possibly include some tutorials since people are always asking him how to play this or that. Would be amazing to have his "official" word on some of these riffs, eh?
Yeah Ben, I'm always disappointed when these interviewers rehash things that have been covered in maybe 15 other interviews. I mean, ask him something we DON'T know... ask him how to play the end of Well I Wonder!!! ;)
Where did you read about Johnny adding tutorials? That sounds great!
In January, The Cribs played San Francisco, and I was fortunate to meet him afterwards outside the club. (Dream come true, of course!) We talked for a minute about how hard it is to work out some of his songs, and he made the comment that he'd like to eventually put some tutorials up on his site. Who knows if that'll ever happen, but at least he's aware of our plight. :)
I created this blog to showcase the guitar work of Johnny Marr from the Smiths, and to help those who want to learn his guitar parts or learn more about his gear and production techniques.
I will cover the catalog song by song, using youtube videos from guitarists, chords, tab, and comments from Johnny when they are available. Many of the songs feature many different guitar tracks; often one person will capture something that another will not, so I will be posting everything that I feel helps with the understanding of the overall song, or any part of it. If anyone has anything to contribute, please email me at thom@smithsonguitar.com
